Designing the Berwick quilt was a rewarding experience. From the beginning, my goal was to create a pattern that would be fat-quarter friendly. What I ended up with was a design that accommodates fat quarters, two-tone colourways, and yardage for the background. I won’t lie—there are tons of half-square triangles (HSTs) in this quilt, which is what gives it its bold geometric look.
Let's talk about sizes and colours!
Since the Berwick comes in four different sizes, it can suit a range of needs.
My 'baby Berwick' is 36x36" and perfect for young ones, either as a car blanket, playmat, or bed quilt. Currently, this little orange quilt is Sam's daycare quilt as it's now into the colder months here in Canada. I used fabrics from my stash to make it and thought that the orange was a colourful addition to my quilt family. I walking foot quilted it, echoing some of the lines.
Next is the cover quilt, ‘Elaine’s Berwick’. Everyone in our house has a Berwick quilt! This 54x54" version is shown on the back of the pattern as the ‘Lap’ size. I used the Libs Elliott Workshop collection for the main fat quarters and Rancho Relaxo for the background. I’ve been saving this bundle of Libs Elliott fabrics for just the right project, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out. Like the baby version, I quilted it with simple walking foot lines and some line echoing.
Last but not least is ‘Liam’s Berwick’. My husband requested a version of this quilt and chose the largest size (known as the ‘Large Throw’) for extra coziness on the couch. Once completed, it will measure 72x72". I’m using the Libs Elliott Almost Blue collection, which has also been waiting in my stash for the perfect quilt. He picked Stonewash Canvas Texture for the background, as blue is his favourite colour. For this one, I’ve decided to quilt it with a QAYG (quilt-as-you-go) method, which I’ll share in a future post.
I hope these Berwick quilts inspire you to get the pattern and start making your own! You can find it in print at Mad About Patchwork or online in my Etsy store: Woven Ladybug on Etsy.
