Quilt: Days of Spring 1

Days of Spring 1 "Days of Spring 1" is my newest semi improv piece. It was inspired by one of my many sketches of flowers that I've made in the recent past. I've included some transparencies in the leaves and flower, which I find makes the colours pop a little. While working on it, I was having an interesting time figuring out how to puzzle them together. The hardest part was connecting the stem near the top and making the two sides of the piece meet.  Everything in this piece is free hand drawn and then transferred to freezer paper to create the final piece. I've included some progress pictures to showcase the train of thought. I will be hand quilting it in the near future, as I hope to enter it in the Ottawa Modern Quilt Guild's Gala in June '24. Berwick Quilt Pattern

Designing the Berwick quilt was a rewarding experience. From the beginning, my goal was to create a pattern that would be fat-quarter friendly. What I ended up with was a design that accommodates fat quarters, two-tone colourways, and yardage for the background. I won’t lie—there are tons of half-square triangles (HSTs) in this quilt, which is what gives it its bold geometric look.  Let's talk about sizes and colours! Since the Berwick comes in four different sizes, it can suit a range of needs. My 'baby Berwick' is 36x36" and perfect for young ones, either as a car blanket, playmat, or bed quilt. Currently, this little orange quilt is Sam's daycare quilt as it's now into the colder months here in Canada. I used fabrics from my stash to make it and thought that the orange was a colourful addition to my quilt family. I walking foot quilted it, echoing some of the lines. Next is the cover quilt, ‘Elaine’s Berwick’. Everyone in our house has a Berwick quilt! This...

Rocket Pattern

The Rocket pattern has been an idea that has lived rent free in my head for about a year, year and a half now. It had originally come from a mug. A couple years ago, the Ottawa MQG had a challenge to make charity quilts inspired by mug designs. My husband and I decided to try to find interesting mugs at thrift stores and see what was inspirational. I ended up not getting the mug that inspired the Rocket pattern. I don’t remember the whole mug, but I loved the rainbow palette and the curves. I would say it was from the 70s. After trying so many variations, I settled on the current Rocket pattern and then decided it would be my first quilt pattern. This pattern is great for solids or non directional fabrics and can be made in 1-2 days depending on sewing speed. There are three sizes for the rocket. The baby/lap size is 49x63in, Twin size is 70x90in, and the Double is 79x90in.  My rainbow version used the following Kona Cottons: Citrus, Torch, Tomato, Velvet, Surf, and Clover. I...
